How a Maheshwari Saree is Made?

A nine step journey that transforms fine yarns into timeless Maheshwari sarees handwoven heritage from the heart of Madhya Pradesh.

A Legacy Woven Through Generations

Maheshwari sarees have been woven in the town of Maheshwar, on the banks of river Narmada, for over three centuries. Inspired by the vision of Ahilya Bai Holkar, this timeless craft reflects elegance, simplicity and the rich cultural heritage of Madhya Pradesh.

Our Journey of Craftmanship

Every Pravansi saree passes through the hands of skilled artisans, preserving techniques refined over generations.

सोर्सिंग

A Maheshwari saree begins with a silk-cotton blend fine cotton for the body, pure silk for the border. Weavers source each thread carefully; its quality decides the drape, the shine, the life of the saree.

रंगाई

Yarn is dyed in skeins submerged in colour, dried in open air. No shortcuts. Uneven dyeing means uneven fabric, so every skein is checked before it reaches the loom.

बॉबिन

The dyed yarn is wound onto small bobbins, each one carrying the weft thread through the loom. It looks like a simple step. It isn't — one uneven wind shows up as a flaw in the finished fabric.

लूम सेटअप

Hundreds of warp threads are stretched, counted, and tied. Tension is set by feel, not by machine years of experience held in the hands. Many looms in Maheshwar have been passed down for generations.

ताना-बाना

Tana is the warp, stretched lengthwise on the loom. Bana is the weft, carried across by the shuttle. Each pass builds the fabric row by row a single saree body takes thousands of passes, placed in rhythm by the weaver's hand and foot.

बुगड़ी बॉर्डर

The border is woven separately, with its own tension and often a contrasting pattern. This is where the saree's identity shows most clearly the border is its signature.

ज़री-पल्लू

Zari — fine metallic thread, traditionally silver coated in gold — is woven directly into the fabric, running through the border and pallu. It's part of the weave itself, not embroidery. The pallu is where the weaver has the most creative freedom, and a detailed one can add days to the work.

जांच

The finished saree is checked first by the weaver, then by the person sourcing it for thread pulls, uneven weave, colour inconsistency, zari breaks, border alignment. If it doesn't pass, it doesn't leave.

पैकेजिंग

The saree is folded, wrapped in tissue, and packaged with care. The first moment you open it is part of the experience unwrapping should feel like unwrapping something that knows it's special.
